People on the whole can be quite baffling. For instance:
1) An observation on the selling of edible goods - "Is this fresh?" - By far the most baffling question one can be asked when one is on the other side of the counter. What exactly do they think my answer will be? "No, of course it is not fresh. What kind of place do you think this is? Quiet your voice down! People may suspect we sell fresh products... what will anyone think of us then?!?!"
Of course it's fresh you dolt, and if it wasn't, do you think a merchant selling lousy product is going to let you know because you asked? Save your breath.
2) Someone shows up at your store
10 minutes after you have closed and wants to be let in.
They say: "I'll be really quick, I know what I want." Now this situation can play out one of two ways:
a) If you're a sucker and let them in, it never fails that the outcome is one of the following:
The person actually has no idea what they want and takes an astronomically long time choosing and getting out of the store. Or...
They did know what they want but 3 other people who also arrived late think it's their lucky day and sneak in after the first person, inevitably taking as long or longer than the first.
b) You stay strong and in the intrests of going home, you say no. This person will usually have a tantrum, generally about how fast they had to rush out here. They'll tell you all about their life and how hard it is, how they're going to be late for the dinner party now, and so on. My favorite is "I need this *insert product name here* for tonight!!!". Yes, this is very sad, and my heart does go out to you... but next time plan ahead, leave yourself some time and if it doesn't work out, have a backup plan. And for heaven's sake keep your dignity man! (or woman!) Nobody likes a crybaby or a troll so please refrain from turning into either. Did it occur to you that you're making me late for
my dinner party?
3) "Will you make it look nice." or "You'll do a good job right?" - I don't belive much needs to be said about these, they run in a similar vein as "Is this fresh?". I thought they bore mentioning anyway. As if I might harbour a passion for making things look ulgy, these people had the foresight to do some detective work. Ah, good thing we asked!
